By using the descriptions and the proper tags (eg, H1, H2, etc.), you help Google AdWords to define what your site is all about. Therefore, it can return it in relevant searches by prospects.
For example, let's say your site sells lingerie; following are how some of your header tags and descriptions might read:
H1: buy plus-size lingerie
H2: cheapest place to buy teddies
H3: why thongs are cheaper than bikini underwear
In essence, you're giving Google AdWords three bites at the apple helping them to correctly categorize your site as one that sells, obviously, lingerie.

Improve Organic Search Results: When search engines are categorizing pages, relevant results pop up in paid search results, as well as organic (unpaid) results. So if your headings are worded correctly and coded properly, it helps your site to rank well in organic search results as well.
